Restoring Downtown Delavan

Every spring, something magical happens along Locust Street and at our Post Office.
Thanks to Connie Madden, Delavan’s own "flower lady," the streets bloom with vibrant colors. Connie pours her heart into each flower pot, filling them with fresh soil and a variety of plants that transform our downtown into a English garden. Her dedication is evident as she tends to these pots daily, rain or shine, ensuring each one grows into a lush, overflowing spectacle by season’s end.

Downtown Delavan Update
Long time Delavan residents fondly remember the once-bustling downtown with its beautiful historic buildings filled with businesses, shoppers, and energy. For the past few years, the City of Delavan has made it a priority to bring that back.

In 2023, the City of Delavan launched several initiatives aimed at revitalizing its downtown. These programs focus on preserving the architectural beauty while making it easier for small business owners to set up shop and thrive.

Thanks to TIF funding and partnerships with local consultants and community enthusiasts, Delavan is witnessing a resurgence. This past year has seen significant progress signaling a bright future for downtown Delavan. Here are a few highlights.

  • Downtown buildings have been purchased by new owners and are in the midst of renovations for apartments and retail space

  • TIF funding backed building rehab projects are saving historic downtown buildings and helping small business owners grow their businesses

  • SmartStart Delavan, a small business development program, started October 2023

  • Bashar’s Italian American Cuisine opened February 2024

  • Ichabod’s Apothecary opened and started offering classes March 2024

  • Remodeled retail and apartment spaces will be available late 2024
