Adrian Rabe with Keystone Construction

Breathing New Life Into Historic Buildings

For nearly 20 years, Adrian Rabe, owner and operator of Keystone Construction, has been building and remodeling homes and commercial buildings. What began as a career in masonry has evolved into a passion for taking old, often forgotten buildings and restoring them to their former glory.

“I enjoy taking something that’s old and past its use and giving it new life,” Adrien says.

One of his latest restoration projects is on Locust Street in Delavan’s historic downtown. With the help of TIF funds from the City Of Delavan, Adrian was able to purchase three downtown buildings that were in desperate need of repair and TLC.

Two of the buildings were originally built in 1870 and have served various purposes over the years, from a department store to an antique shop, with apartments upstairs. One building was most recently a restaurant.

Adrian saw beyond their worn exteriors and envisioned a way to bring them back to life—honoring their history while infusing them with modern touches.

His current plan is to join these three storefronts creating a cohesive space that will serve the community in new and exciting ways. One idea on the table is an event center, complete with a commercial kitchen that can be rented by those needing one for a food-based business. This project is still in its early stages, but it represents Adrian’s broader goal: to contribute to the resurgence of Delavan’s downtown.

Locust Street, once a bustling hub of activity, had seen quieter days in recent years. However, thanks to the efforts of passionate individuals like Adrian, Delavan’s downtown is experiencing a renaissance with new businesses opening and historic buildings being saved.
