Ichabod's Apothecary

Discovering the Old Ways: Ichabod's Apothecary

Delavan resident, Tommie Chadwick always dreamed of opening an apothecary, a place where the ancient wisdom of herbalism could be shared with a modern audience. In the coming months, Ichabod's Apothecary at 412 S Locust St. will officially open with a mission to reintroduce the healing power of herbs and natural practices to her community.

A Personal Journey

Growing up, Tommie was immersed in the old ways of herbalism, learning from the women in her family. This traditional knowledge wasn't just a hobby; it was a necessity. Tommie suffers from idiopathic environmental intolerance and multiple chemical sensitivities. Modern medicine offers little relief, so she turned to herbalism to stay healthy and functional.

"My condition means that I have to avoid much of the modern world," Tommie explains. "Utilizing herbs and natural practices is the only way I can keep myself healthy. I believe these older ways can be very beneficial in our modern lives."

Building a Unique Business

Launching Ichabod's Apothecary wasn't without its challenges. Tommie had to explain what an apothecary is and how it should be classified to state officials and insurance companies. "Being small and unique, complying with federal standards was a challenge. But with great challenges come great rewards," she reflects.

Tommie leaned on the City Of Delavan’s SmartStart Delavan small business development workshops and the Illinois Small Business Development Center at Bradley University for additional guidance.

Educating and Expanding

Education is a cornerstone of Ichabod's Apothecary. The full shop is not open yet, but Tommie  currently offers various classes on herbalism in the space, from specific topics to certification programs for becoming a CertifiedHerbalist. When the doors fully open, the apothecary will offer around 280 different herbs, spices, and teas, along with 50 house blends of teas.

The response from the community has been overwhelmingly positive. "I can't tell you how many people have thanked me for opening such a unique business," Tommie says. "People are interested in learning about herbs and their functions in daily lives."

A Vision for the Future

Tommie's long-term goals are ambitious. She plans to release her own brand of healing products, open a certified kitchen for entrepreneurs, and establish a tea house with an alcohol-free bar offering herbal and fruit drinks. "My goal is for Ichabod's Apothecary to become a destination stop, attracting people from all over Illinois," she says.

Inclusivity and a welcoming atmosphere are also crucial to Tommie's vision. "When you walk into the apothecary, I want it to feel like you are walking into your grandmother's home," she says. "Full of welcoming scents and people with a knowledge of herbs to guide you on your herbal educational journey."
